Americanism and Children & Youth
Weekly Report to the National Commander
January 7, 2010
Bill Pease, Director – (317) 630-1203
April Is…Children & Youth Month
In 1938, April was formally designated as the Child Welfare Month (now called Children & Youth Month) and has continued on an annual basis. Whether you are planning a community project, sponsoring a carnival, or featuring a youth panel at a local school to address students’ concerns, now is the time to begin planning for your April Is…Children & Youth Month activities. This would be a great month to conduct a fundraising activity to benefit your local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. If you need ideas for fundraising activities, please contact Bob Caudell at rcaudell@legion.org for “101 Brainstorming Ideas to Raise Funds.”
Financial Assistance.
The American Legion’s Temporary Financial Assistance Program (TFA) continues to provide for the basic needs of veteran’s children through cash grants made possible through the American Legion Endowment Fund Corporation. TFA assisted 1,137 minor children throughout the United States maintain shelter, utilities, food, and clothing with over $521,117 in cash grants in 2009.
Support Network
The American Legion’s Family Support Network stands ready to assist those families affected by activation and deployments in support of the Global War on Terror. Families and military personnel can contact the Family Support Network in one of three ways: the toll-free national hotline 1-800-504-4098 or by completing the electronic application located at http://www.legion.org/fsn. The National Headquarters of The American Legion received 2,650 requests during 2009.
Nation
Letters of invitation were sent to the potential Boys Nation staff. Staff has already begun to schedule visits and speakers for the 2010 Boys Nation curriculum.
Baseball
On January 1, the online registration for the 2010 American Legion Baseball season became available. This is the first time in American Legion Baseball history that coaches have had the ability to register their team via the Internet through a digital, step-by-step process that tightens administrative communication efforts and lends additional value for players and fans.
